Giulio Superti-Furga, Scientific Director of the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Marta Miączyńska, Director of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB), have been appointed new Chair and Co-Chair of the EU-LIFE alliance of leading life science research institutes in Europe.
Over the next two years, Giulio and Marta will work closely with Marta Agostinho, EU-LIFE’s Executive Director, to help shape the European research scene, particularly with regard to scientific excellence. EU-LIFE’s priorities for the near future include emphasising the role of research institutes in the scientific ecosystem, the creation of spaces for dialogue on the future of research, as well as the expansion of the alliance and its impact on the scientific landscape.
“The Life Sciences are a strong pillar of science in Europe contributing significantly to the strength of Europe as a research area on a global scale. In the coming two years as Chair of EU-LIFE, I am determined to continue our quest – together with Marta Miączyńska, Marta Agostinho, and all EU-LIFE colleagues – to keep research institutes at the forefront of innovation in research management through exploring best practice while advocating what is required to improve the conditions to perform research in the Life Sciences at the highest level”, said Giulio Superti-Furga, Scientific Director of CeMM and new Chair of EU-LIFE.
“I am thrilled to work together with Giulio, Marta and all EU-LIFE colleagues in the next two years. We have to keep propagating the importance of fundamental research for the future of the united Europe, for the wellbeing and prosperity of our societies. Equally important is to elaborate and promote the highest standards of how research is being conducted in our institutes. The IIMCB stands firmly behind the values represented by the EU-LIFE and together with my coworkers we will make every effort to contribute to further development of the alliance“, said Marta Miączyńska, Director of IIMCB and new Co-Chair of EU-LIFE.
As for our work on policy, the European Research Area, Horizon Europe and its successor FP10 are some of the current EU-LIFE’s focus areas. In addition, the alliance will continue to nurture its thriving community and to advocate for an open, collaborative and inclusive research culture.
Giulio Superti-Furga was Co-Chair of EU-LIFE for the last two years and steps up as the new Chair of the alliance, succeeding Mónica Bettencourt-Dias, Director of the IGC. We are deeply thankful to Mónica for her outstanding work as Chair, for leading the EU-LIFE community in such an inspiring way and for hosting the 10th anniversary conference.
